ROBERT K. MCLELLAN MEMORIAL AWARD

History of Robert Kim McLellan.

Robert Kim was born in Drumheller, Alberta on September 27, 1954, along with an identical twin brother, Kevin. Both were welcomed into the family by their parents, Murray and Doreen McLellan, and an older brother, Kerry. The clan later expanded to five children with the addition of Frederick Kent in 1959 and Kris in 1963.

In 1996, Kim fell ill with esophageal cancer, a diagnosis that was reported to the family on Christmas Eve. Kim vowed to never spend a night in the hospital so his family, including numerous nieces and nephews, cared for him at his home as he slipped further and further under the spell of the cancer. On April 2, 1997, Kim had fallen ill to the point that additional medical attention was required. Kim's family spent the day with him at the Drumheller Health Centre until he could no longer hold on and passed away shortly after 10 p.m., never spending a single night in the hospital.

Kim was a community-oriented resident of Midland and served as the President of the Midlandvale Community Hall Association. He worked at the local post office for more than 20 years, never missing a day of work until he took ill. Even after a long day at work, Kim always found time to spend with his family and was well-known for spoiling his nieces and nephews since he never had children of his own. The community was a priority to Kim and he could always be seen cutting grass, cleaning the hall and helping his neighbours.

After Kim's passing in 1997, his family created the Robert K. McLellan Memorial Award, an award focused in recognizing and commending a Drumheller resident who, like Kim, donates his or her time to community functions, performs volunteer work and helps others without consideration of merit or reward.
